Subject: Re: strobes was Re: Gear for sale
I have owned four tektites, i have purchased seven, the others went to fellow
dive boat mates. The one strobe that still works belongs to a guy who doesnt
dive anymore, and i havent asked him if it survived the winter in his garage.
The tektite floods easily and the battery contact strip is a thin strip of
metal, that breaks easily. I have not had a problem with the switch on the cheap
strobe, but then i dont dive so blasted that i cant remember which way to turn
it to turn it on. If you wash the strobe after each days use the switch is very
reliable, I have fourty dives on the one chinese whereas the six tektite have
maybe twenty dives total, using them one at a time. The bottom line is if i need
to buy a replacement once a month, its better if its cheap.

Personally I dont like the idea of relying on a switch as it would seem to be
more fragile, but my experience indicates this is the better choice, at least
until barry miller starts building marker light strobes. And I use a strobe and
a line, as its stupid not to lay a line, i got tired of getting lost. I know
some deep air types who prefer the strobes to penetration lines because they
cant tangle themselves when they are blasted deep. Your mileage may of course
differ.....
