Yep.  I read some interviews with the technical advisors and producers.
The helmets were specially designed so that one could see the actors
inside, although there was (according to the interviews) some companies
interested in manufacturing them commercially.

(The interviews were, I believe, in one of the issues of OMNI magazine)
