I was told it was the HP guage that is the real worry when flooding the first stage, because once the water gets in there you can't get it out easily (need to take the whole thing apart and service). When a set of regs goes into the tub (fresh water) without a dust cap on at the shop I DM for the HP hose is removed and air is blasted through the first stage to remove any water. I'd doubt flooding would seriously affect the functioning of the first or second stage on a dive (would need to be properly cleaned and serviced afterwards though). But then I wouldn't deliberately do it to my own gear if I didn't have to (had to replace a piston recently after sand got in and put a nick in the knife edge).
