As a partial defense of this method of diving and the lack of SPG's, I believe
that there are quite a few professional diving units who use this method,
including the NSW (a State in Oz) Police Diving Unit for one.

The reason is that they often (mostly?) dive in such crud that they wouldn't be
able to see their SPG's anyway. Therefore, decanting their bottles in this
fashion is, I would think, the only form of gas management available to them.

Hmmmm, any thoughts on that last?

This not, however, an excuse not to mount tanks "right way up" in today's more
enlightened times. Yet we all know how hard it is for entrenched methods to be
changed.

Only the other day there was a clip of two of them in action in a local river.
They were covered in mud and slime and weed and they were using full AGA face
masks. They were searching for evidence and they were diving in conditions
which are definitely NOT my cup of coffee.

We have the choice to abort the dive in these conditions and I, for one,
certainly would.

They don't have that choice.

Christian
