The United States Deep Dive Foundation, Inc (a not for profit organization) will be sponsoring a wreck hunting expedition along the North Carolina coast, April 19 thru 23. The USDDF will employ a local charter operation and has contracted use of a magnatometer and technician from Tidewater Atlantic Research (Gordon P. Watts, Jr. CEO). The goals of the expedition will be to: 1) locate shipwrecks of historical significance and/or interest to sport divers. 2) Identify found wrecks if time constraints permit. 3) Locate sites for future survey/mapping expeditions. 4) Provide a unique opportunity to sport divers to dive a "virgin wreck" and participate in an expedition. Participation is open to any diver with suitable experience/certification for diving in the primary search area (100 to 140 fsw..... deeper locations may be searched dependent upon interest of participants and experience levels). Membership in USDDF is not required. The expedition is operating on a "cost share" basis..... "fees" *may* be tax deductible. Search areas will be based upon a substantial list of "hang numbers" collected by local charter boat operator, Capt. George Purifoy, (credited with finding the U352 and numerous other NC shipwrecks), as well as historical recordings of the locations of lost vessels. As over 2000 ships have been documented as being lost off the coast of North Carolina, with the locations of only about 200 hundred being known, potential for success is thought to be high. If you've dreamed of diving a "virgin shipwreck" or participating in an expeditionary project this may be one of your best opportunities. Space is limited. For more information there is a detailed description of the expedition at http://members.aol.com/USDeepDive/ or email your request to this address: USDDF MAR@ao*.co* (Please do not respond to the lists).
