So far I have discovered that when I try to get information, including
supposedly
publicly available information, out of Medical Examiners or law enforcement
officials in the US, the answer is a resounding "are you a member of the
family?".

The whole handling of deaths seems very at odds with the English tradition of an
open Coroner's Court, in which the fact of an accidental or homicidal death are
firmly established.  Compare this with the treatment in South Africa Rehan
Bouwer .
