Had the pleasure of talking with Hess last weekend. He was the guest speaker
at our annual California Shipwreck Diver dinner. He is intelligent, and
compassionate, and does ACTUALLY DO THE TYPE OF DIVING we love. He is a
solid individual and we should all support him. You should have seen some of
his photos of the AD. He is really up on his maritime law, especially those
that relate to shipwreck diving regulation.
For the last six years I have been making regular dives on a Southern
California wreck called the Olympic, just outside the San Pedro Harbor. She
is a truly beautiful dive and sits on the sand at just under 100 FSW. She
was an old Alaska Packers ship. Everything that has been removed from her (
*** not by me but other divers *** ) is a violation of the Abandoned
Shipwreck Act. This law is designed to protect our precious underwater
resources, but wait . . .
Guess what ! The Federal government has begun a major harbor dredging
project that will either completely destroy this wreck site or at least bury
the site under 25 foot of sand, rock, rubble and silt.
So basically what the government is saying is that shipwrecks are precious
and to be protected, until the governmnet decides to destroy them. (
Moniter recovery is a prime example ).
Don't even get me strarted on the Brother Jonathan litigation. ( This has
almost bankrupted some friends of mine because of litigation costs to fight
with a greedy State government.
THIS IS INSANITY.
