SPY BOMB BLAMED FOR 1918 SINKING
Raleigh NC- Formerly classified Russian documents show that a bomb planted by a
German spy, not a mine, and the USS San Diego off Long Island, NY in 1918, a
Univ. of North Carolina historian said.  For more than 80 years no one has known
for certian what sank the 503 foot battle cruiser 11 miles off the Long Is.
coast on July 19, 1918.  6 of the 1114 sailors aboard died.  Russell Van Vyk, a
lecturer at UNC-Chapel Hill, said Thursday that records obtained from Moscow
revealed that German agent Kurt Jahnke planted a bomb in the boiler room of the
battle cruiser. (AP).
