Janet, people can practise all the above while diving a 
single tank without the pony. 

If they want to go to the next level, they should clip a 
pony bottle off on the front on the left side. That way
they're less likely to kid themselves that they're wearing 
doubles.

If they want to practise for wearing manifolded doubles,
they should wear manifolded doubles.

I agree. So: 

1. Single cylinder only dives to be within easy reach of surface.

2. For slightly deeper dives, clip a pony bottle off ON FRONT.

3. Overhead or decompression dives require doubles.

Easy innit?
