You know I have been leafing through various books on diving latley and it is truly rare when a diver spends the time to describe a clusterfuck situation, esp. if there were no witnesses. What is a clusterfuck? This is a series of events that combine and conspire with each other to the point that a dive is unsurvivable. The ones who do survive were able to recognize the onset of a CF and take some measures or simply have a strong survival instinct which pulls their ass through. But as we know, CFs can reach the point that even the survivors can't handle the situation. But sitting down and analyzing a Near Death Experience is hard to do, the "fog of panic" makes it hard to recall certain details plus I think that there are other reasons for the general reluctance out there: -Superstition, it's bad luck to dwell on a NDE. It is important to wash it out of your mind to keep from attracting fate once again. -Macho, it just looks bad if you've done something really stupid, I mean why does everybody have to know about it? -Family, lets face it, this is a dangerous sport and nobody wants the word of a NDE getting back to the family or they might force the diver to quit doing the thing he or she loves most. If you can find the courage, or have the unselfish desire to get over these hurtles, then lives could be saved. There are some who like the recall "the time they almost died" as a macho exercise, where just about every dive results in a NDE, but I think that even these fellows get strangely silent when they have had a true, by-golly-you-betcha of a tank-slapper Imgonnadie experience.
