Chuck, Dan and anyone else, Oxygen scavengers are needed, even during prolonged (life-time) exposure to normoxia. Thus, we don't need to evolve special scavengers for hyperoxia since the right tools are already there. However, since hyperoxia taxes the antioxidative protection a lot more than what we're designed for we may deplete the scavengers during prolonged exposure to high PO2. When we want to add more of the right stuff for unusual exposures to oxygen, vitamin E supplement is a good first choice. RDA (recommended daily allowance) refers to normal life requirements and may be marginally sufficient even then. (The idea seems to be, take it down to a level where there's no obvious, short-term signs of insufficiency. This pretty much defines RDA!). Mainstream medicine likes to limit the intake of everything -- even the good stuff. As divers, however, we don't fit into the average category at all since we're exposed to unusual levels of oxidative action through hyperoxia. It may be prudent to dose antioxidants lavishly to counteract the (potential) ravages of hyperoxia. regards, Hans P. Roverud -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
