Cave Exploration in Okayama, Japan

A survey team led by a TDI cave diver Akio Kitazawa of Tokyo is currently
exploring Himesaka Kanachiana and Suwadou, two major cave systems in
Okayama prefecture, Japan, to locate the pathway that connects both
systems. The use of tracer chemicals has already confirmed the connection
between two caves, which are approximately 1 km apart from each other.
There is a sump ("Pool of God" as called locally) in Himesaka Kanachiana
that leads to a very large submerged room about the size of a baseball
field. Suwadou houses its own sump at the end of the dry section, but it
had never been explored beyond that point, primarily due to the lack of
trained cave divers in the area. The team conducted a series of dives on
11/4/98 to go through the first Suwadou sump and found a dry pathway. The
virgin tunnel was approximately 20 m wide, and 50 m high. A small stream
ran along the path that remotely resembles that of a well-landscaped
Japanese garden. They dove past another sump, after which they saw a
multiple waterfalls on the wall. They turned back at that point this time,
but plan to go back to extend the route even farther.
