When I was doing my dive master, I chose a small island in Sydney to map called Bare Island. It's the site of one of Sydney's first (and only) forts at La perouse (the first landing place of Captain Cook). Anyway it's joined to the mainland by a bridge, and is maybe 70 metres (ummm 230'?) wide at the widest point. anyway I took compass barings when I started and did the western side. as the front of the island (south) is divable only in good weather, I did the eastern side next followed by the shallow and choppy section under the bridge. Finally when I did the front I was most concerned that the island on my map was nowhere near the same shape as the real island, and that the two sides didn't join! After MUCH discussion (and re-diving the site, taking barings again and again with different compasses) I found out that the island is one of Sydney's magnetic islands. Doh.
