When presented with the same problem, I tried the single-tank mounting
brackets and found them to be a real pain.  So, My solution was a pair
of Dive-Rite junior wings (don't need that much lift for a single tank,
and besides it can even make a nice backup on a small doubles rig).

My solution was a scubapro backpack laced much the way the dive-rite 
harness is done, with those junior wings attached.  It mounts cleanly,
close in, and has the same freedom of movement and hard-point attachments
as the wings.
