Like any cold water site on the west coast, "you pays your money and you takes your chances" with vis and sea conditions. The vis was 25-30 ft and the temp was low 50's. If you will be here on a weekend, try to get on a boat. Try Cypress Charters 408] 244-4433 or Monterey Bay Dive Center for reservations. Otherwise, you can contact the ba_diving list through http://www.best.com/~kylem to find a buddy. Beach diving in Monterey is very good much of the time. The life is completely different than East Coast or Great Lakes. We have heavy kelp forests which host a large variety of sea life including sea mammels. Don't be surprized to see Harbor Seals or Sea Lions while you dive. There is no coral as the water is too cold to support it, but there is Hydracoral. There are many varieties of invertabrates and fishes. Sea conditions are not what East Coast divers are used to. Normal seas are 8-12 ft swells every 9-15 seconds with 1-4 ft wind waves on top. The boats are set up to get you into this and back out with little problem. Average dives are 30-130 ft, 30-60 minutes with no planned deco. The Cypress Charters boats, Cypress Sea and Cypress Point both can pump Nitrox to 3300 PSI. Both supply tanks. You supply everything else. The everything else can be rented locally.
