Have you ever tried to donate something to a museum?  It's not worth the effort.
A few years ago a friend found charts from the U-853, in fairly descent shape.  
No museum he contacted was interested in them.  And if a museum is interested, 
they usually insist the artifact be cleaned and preserved first, at your 
expense.
Don't worry, unless it's gold, the government doesn't want it.
