The latest edition of DeepBS magazine is indeed a classic. This issue's "public enemy number 1" appears to be Tim O'Leary, as he is the featured villain in the article "The Most Exciting Dive I Never Did." The article basically calls Tim a liar for claiming to have done 528' on air. There are so many ironies in this article that I do not know where to begin. First, look at the author..."Compiled by the DeepTech Editoral Staff." Hmmm...I guess Gilliam got tired of being sued for making accusations he could not prove. Second, they had a chance to speak out against the stupidity of deep air, something Tim now preaches, but never did...they seemed much more interested in bashing Tim. Now why would they want to do that? Could it have anything to do with the fact that Tim is heading up NAUI's new Tech program, an obvious threat to TDI? No, surely not. Third, the reasoning for their assertion that the dive never happend is interesting. They support their argument by pointing out that Tim claims to have done the dive on an 80 and that with a SAC of 0.75 cu ft/min, he would not have had enough gas. Well, for the typical "DeepTech Editorial Staff" member, 0.75 might be pretty damn good, but having dove with Tim, I call tell you his is about half that. Next, it seems ironic that when Gilliam did his then record dive to 4whatever, he used a similar gear configuration, and when his story was questioned on similar grounds he boasted that he could do dives like that because of his outstanding air consumption, which we can now assume must be .75 or greater, which is by the way, flat out shitty. Having dove with Gilliam, I can tell you that that is being generous. Finally, the greatest irony of all comes from the fact that on the preceeding page is an quote by the BatMan himself, Jim Bowden. Regarding his 925' dive (?!?) he states "Where did I stop? Who knows? I was desperate to get out of there." And he is the great hero of DeepBS magazine! In this same article, a list of sub 500' dives is presented. Can there be a more irresponsible act than to promote and encourage this kind of activity? I can see every wide eyed Tom, Dick and Harry of tech diving reading this and saying to themselves, "hey, all I have to do is a bounce dive to 500' and I can be famous just like Jim Bowden!" What a bunch of crap. How does this rag stay in business? Amazing. Frank -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
