Wrolf,

My understanding of the circumstances is this. Jane and the others were
wearing coms devices, which created a dead space in their breathing systems.
The other survivors of that dive reported symptoms of co2 tox problems
<fatigue, headache>. THe analysis of the remaining gas volumes showed that
due
to the length of time Jane was breathing the 80/20 she must have switched to
it at depth and been breathing it for the majority of her deco.
It would seem that jane was also experiencing co2 retention problems .
She overcame these problems at depth, where the inspired o2 levels would have
been elevated greatly. As she ascended the level of inspired o2 actually
drops, due to the reduction in pressure. This is covered in most good basic
nitrox courses, Ed Betts made a point of stressing in it mine. At some point
Jane does not have enough o2 in her bloodstream to sustain consciousness and
she suffers shallow water blackout. The principle manifestation of swb is a
sudden loss of consciousness, and a spasm of the arms into in a full
extension, arching of the back and gradual sinking. This is the exact position
that Jane was recovered in. As Jane suffered swb she was transitioning from
using her drysuit to control her buoyancy to her wings. This behavior is
common in new drysuit divers, a lesser ability to control the drysuit. Perhaps
if the wings had been able to hold gas jane might have rocketed to the surface
instead of falling to the bottom.

This is all something that should have been clearly evident to Jane's
instructor, who compounded his error by refusing to rescue Jane, while she
breathed through the remainder of her gas on the bottom, as she did not have a
traditional mouthpiece to spit, but rather this convoluted dive coms, and in
swb you wont convulse like o2 tox will.

As far as for the IANTD board of directors one of them was on this forum just
after the accident, asking what was the problem why didnt we understand that
accidents like this happen all the time etc etc etc.

I am getting tired of the bullshit on this issue as this was all posted
previously and is easily understandable to anyone who can read between words
like stroke, farm animal stupid, battleship mouth , tough guy etc. Please
review the archeives before posting again on this topic, as you may know Alan
Pelstring knew Jane well and was engagaed to marry her i believe and I am
sure that having to re visit this issue on a continual basis is not good for
him.
