Subject: Those who forget the past...#22
"Another incident occurredwhich was cause for greater concern. During their
descent into the 308 tunnel from 270 Rock on the way in, Parker said that he
was working fairly hard, just trying to get the DPV to behave in some tight
turns, when suddenly he noticed the unmistakable sensation of facial twitching
and numbness in his lips. He immediately switched to his 5th (!) independent
stage bottle of heliox and found that once he had done that the feeling went
away as fast as it had comeInvestigation following the incident showed that
very small leaks existed in both sleds. These were too tiny to permit an air
leak, but sufficient to permit a small helium leak. Since these sleds were
topped off' following each dive rather than recharged, it was concluded that
the slow helium loss eventually led to increased oxygen concentration to
produce the symptoms described above. The solution was to attend to the
valves, and to establish a procedure of completely emptying the bank prior to
recharging."
