You know, Bill, as much as I hate to admit it, I see your point.

Now I have to think it all out again, and that's going to make my head
hurt.

What do you do with a team member who doesn't cut it? What do you do with
a team member who shows up with bad gear, or worse, a bad attitude? Don't
you show him the gate?

How does this translate? How do we separate out the Captains like Bryce,
who runs a great boat, from the captains who will kill us? How do we show
them the gate?

If they are, as you say, going to be the Surface Managers as well as the
Captains, (a point of view I'm willing to entertain- it actually is very
attractive on a number of points), don't they need to to show some sort
of qualification for that position? Don't they need to know how to be a
team member? Are you advocating PADI DMs with 48 dives dictating how
divers get in the water? Doesn't Dawn know PRECISLY what is going on on
the beach, under water, and with the people she deals with when she's
executing her role? Doesn't she bring an impressive list of skills to the
beach to deal with it? How do we make sure that the captains in question
have those skills, and how do we ge the ones who don't out the gate?

My main thrust here, is how does a tightly knit, highly trained, heavily
experianced team like WKPP translate to the open market? How can we
recreate the structure and the teamwork with what we have to work with?

And if we can't, (because most of our captains are not Dawn, and none of
our divers are George), why should we hand the authority, and its
attendent responsibility to someone who is, as we've just determined, not
equipped to accept it?

If we can't, (and while I think I would like it better if we could, I
don't think we can) isn't it better to make sure the divers accept the
responsibility?

Or at least, that SOMEONE knows that the responsibility lies with them?
