As an example, let's say you are going to switch to your 50m mix at 50m.  
You look at whatever bottles you are carrying and choose the 50m bottle.  
You open the valve of the bottle that is marked 50m.  You take the reg 
from the bottle that is marked 50m and put it in your mouth.  If you can 
breathe, it is the correct mix.  If you have opened the valve on your O2 
bottle, the reg from the 50m bottle won't deliver gas.  If you take the 
reg from your O2 bottle and try to breathe it, the O2 bottle won't 
deliver gas.  Actually, though, in cave diving, you wouldn't have your 
O2 bottle, or any bottle for that matter, more than ~10 feet deeper than 
the first stop you intend to begin using that gas at.
