Don't know about the batteries but I like to use a mixture of 1/3 
topsoil, 1/3 horse crap and 1/3 vermiculite for potting. And if this is 
for tomatoes I like to wave a dead cat 2 or 3 times over the pot before 
planting the seedling. I have no idea why this works, but it makes for an 
early crop. (I got this tip from the "101 ways to use a dead cat" 
reference).
