I used to do the one buckle thing, but...

What happens when you need to remove your gear in the water (nasty
restriction, entanglement, or just handing your gear off to get out of
the water)?  Unless you are very careful, your cannister falls off and
heads straight for the bottom.  Not to mention that it can be difficult
to get rebuckled in the water while holding the cannister back.
