Subject: Common Goal
Forgive me if the details of what I remember as history is a little off, but I
recall that the Cave Diving community was once saddled with a bad reputation
because of diver deaths in caves.

They did "accident analysis" to determine the most common causes. They made
their findings known so that risky behaviour could be avoided by others. They
began to teach accident analysis and the resulting rules for safe cave diving
as part of cave training.

I think tech diving needs the same kind of coming together to analyze the
current situation and recommend ways to avoid the problems we are seeing. I
would suggest that the tech training agencies be part of the discussion group,
as well as other interested divers.

While I am proposing this, I really don't know the way to go about making this
happen. The parties involved obviously need to set aside their differences
and work toward a common goal here. Several days of discussion time in one
location would be ideal, but maybe a forum like this can be that sounding
board.

In the scheme of things, I'm a peon here, but I would like to see a high level
of safety and competence reflected in tech diving and tech training. Whether
in recreational or tech diving, I do watch the accident reports so that I can
learn from other's mistakes. I read the "Why Divers Die" column in "In
Depth", and the Accident Analysis articles in "Alert Diver." I buy the DAN
Accident Report too. I do this not out of morbid fascination, but rather to
be able to pass along the messages about what went wrong. I'd like to see
tech divers do that in a way that is not finger pointing. Perhaps I'm being
naive.

What suggestions do others here have for how to accomplish this? Is it a
reasonable endeavor? How can the results be collected and disseminated?
