Tom,
I've stayed with the DeRosas and with Mike Madden's DEDAM dive center. At
both I found the folks to be helpful, professional and knowledgeable. The
DeRosas cater to cave divers mostly. Their operation is in the heart of
cave diving country a little further south than Mike's, but either are
really a stone's throw away from the best diving there is. The DeRosas
has more of a cave diver ambiance as there are cave divers coming and
going and one has the sense that this is the predominant activity there.
When I stayed at Mike's (arguably more luxurious), we were two of many
tourists staying there in a large luxury hotel, although the rates were
pretty good. Once at the dive shop, we found more cave divers and our
guide was excellent (she's now married to Steve Gerrard). I think either
place will give you a great experience in cave diving. Mike also has a
large dive boat that makes runs to Coz once a week or so. The DeRosas
also do reef diving there at Akumal, but I'm not familiar with either OW
operation.
Mike is a great guy and I wouldn't hesitate to send you there. Steve
Gerrard is likewise a great guy and you can't go wrong with him. The
DeRosas place is nice too, but more laid back and for some folks, they
simply like being surrounded by other cave divers at DeRosas.
