Side mounts are an option used when there is not available space to wear back
mounted tanks, such 
as very tight cave.  Indeed, independent doubles are logistically identical to
sidemounts, but for 
back mounted application they are inferior to isolation manifolded doubles,
from the perspective of 
component and system failure survival probability.
