The leader sets the standard and enforces that standard. Those are not slogans or catch phrases. They are a sacred bond with your followers, your soldiers, your students, your buddy. THEY ARE TRUSTING YOU , THE LEADER, TO LEAD THEM. DO NOT LET THEM DOWN, EVER. Allowing your committment to them to lapse is to be without honor and worthy of the highest contempt by all who know of you. Leadership, true leadership , is about being able to build a shared concensus that a particluar goal is necessary and then to organize a move toward it. I understand it took Mr. Irvine some time to be able to function normally after the SAR effort. "Death is not polite" and if this is what is necessary to mobilize people toward a better way then I accept it. The current state of affairs is killing people. The instructor gods seem to have no problem going on in their merry way. You may not find the effort to inspire change to be "conduct acceptable in a polite society.." but I would re-iterate.." death is not polite..." This will stop, the only question is who stops it, divers or legislators. It is an election year somewhere......
