Subject: Re: Diver Death in Pompano B. Fl......"Murder on the IANTD Express" ---studen.
I've been following the various threads dealing with diver deaths on this
forum for a while and have a few questions. I'm asking any of the respondants
to my questions to put aside all personal feelings about TDI , IANTD and WKPP
and see if there might be a common thread (or several common threads) to these
recent tragadies.
1) From what I recall seeing in various past posts the majority of the recent
deaths
(deep diving) have appeared to occur in Florida. Is this true?
2) How many deaths have occured in the Mid Atlantic and New England waters?
3) Is it possible that something about Florida waters ie: greater vis & wamer
temps,
could be a contributing cause to what has occured?
4) What was the experience factor of the individual divers involved, how long
had they
been certified, how often did they dive and what kind of hidden medical
problems
    might they have had?
5) Does anyone know why deep water divers in the Mid Atlantic and New
England areas are not experiencing these same problems? (Note: the recent
tragedy that occured off VA Beach was as a result of a pre-existing
medical
problem so training agency/methods are not a factor there).

My instructor once made the statement in my basic open water "Unfortunately,
there are good and bad intructors in all agencies, that you should always
always ask lots of questions to anyone who will be giving you instruction in
any level of diving and that you should examine their habits to see if they
adhere to safety in diving. Look to see that they dive their own dives
safely".
In dive planning, my instructor always told me first thing, "Can you do this
dive safely?". And he stressed that over and over.
Is it possible that some instructors have been neglecting to teach this?
I really am curious to find out what common threads exist here. Please, to
those that do choose to reply...let's please keep it on a rational and logical
level without a lot of
needless BS. That way, maybe we can all learn something to make our diving
safer.

Dan
