Jane and Dan had been friends for about 5 years. Jane beleived in derick and they became friends. on this dive he was many things to her- Friend, buddy, instructor, meaning that he was not only Janes buddy out of friendship but derick was also getting PAID TO ENSURE JANES SAFTETY Look at what a 'friend' did not do for her.
