Here's a fitness challenge for all of you tough guys out there who continue to claim to be "in-shape" : 7AM, every Saturday morning at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, FL The objective is to ocean swim with the Gold Coast Hammerheads (along with George Irvine and several other guys who swim with them every weekend). You can bring your fins, paddles, ex-Navy Seal dive buddies, and even scooters to help, but your objective is to stay with these guys for the entire swim, and I am willing to bet that not one of you who continue to pontificate about your level of "fitness" can hold pace with them for the entire swim (which is atleast 3 miles, often 5 or more). Yes, they swim faster than a scooter, and for several hours they will continue to do so. This is a real, true, hard-core workout - not fin swimming, not 20 minutes on a treadmill , not 60 minutes of step aerobics - these guys will go for 2+ hours with the hammer down all the way....after which they head to the pool for an hour of Masters swim practice, or go for a 5 mile run - demonstrating REAL cardiovascular fitness. They will definitely make you aware of what kind of shape you're really in. Good luck -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
