I have had the opportunity to work on many hydraulic (hydraulic meaning fluid)
joints in my career and have experienced the following.
The "plastic" ring usually a high density, abrasive resistant and very tough
nylon is often called a back-up ring. In some applications it prevents the
o-ring from extruding through the clearance between the cylinder and it's end
cap due to a very high worhing pressure. It also ads support to the o-ring in
dynamic applications and helps to push it along and prevent axial deformation.
