Were you asking 'real' tech divers for their opinions? I find it hard to believe that a cave diver would say NO to attaching weights to your backplate. As for how to attach them, my favorite way to attach them (when I needed extra weight) was to cast a weight in the "V" between the the backplate and my back. You cannot get the center of mass of the weight any closer to your own center of mass, and this leads to a comfortable feeling. The only other option is if you want to use drop weights (presumably cave, not wreck diving). Then you can 'hard mount' less weight and clip the rest off on your harness somewhere.
