To anyone interested:

In case the key West 13 mile swim is too daunting for you this is a 5K
Openwater swim in Pensacola in the Santa Rosa Sound put on by Gulf Coast
Aquatics. I have done this swim several times and it is well run and fun.

Unfortuantely, this year I'll be backpacking in northern Ala. so I'll miss it.

The course is a triangle beginning and ending at the same point.

Some rules:

You must be a member of USMS or USS. You can purchase single day
registrations to USMS. This is due to insurance.

You can use a wetsuit but you cannot place if you do. No one can use fins,
pull buoys, leg floats webbed gloves or other possible speed devices.

You can get further info from me and I can fax you an entry form or e-mail
it to you if you have word perfect 6.1. The race director is Steven Fair,
4301 Creighton Rd. #55 Pensacola, Fla. 32504.

I'm at premier@ac*.ne*

Race fee is $25.00 before May 18th, $40.00 thereafter

The best training is to get in some openwater swimming. Anyone interested
can e-mail me and I'll give you what I do. but I am NOT a coach. If you
can't openwater swim get in the pool. This event is very doable by anyone
in reasonable condition right now. If you can swim 2-3 miles in the pool
you can probably make this. Although your opemwater times will usually be
considerably slower than your pool times.

The water is between 65 and 80 degrees. (I know, big variation, but that's
the full range for that time of year) Currents are usually negligble which
is why novices can do this swim. Water depths on the course range from
6-25 feet.

If weather conditions are dangerous (high winds, thunderstorems etc.) the
start of the race is delayed until the weather clears. If the delay is
longer than 2.5 hours the race is rescheduled in which case I may be back
from my trip and will swim it.

It's a great event. Good luck to those who participate!

Susan
