They "think" they are getting the >methionine they need, from nutrition lableing on their plant protein >sources, but the methionine they get is not L-methionine, its a different >molecular form, not the essential one" > >Dan I'm not a vegan but, being a molecular biologist I can tell you this >statement is wrong. There are 8 essential amino acids required for animal >nutrition, essential meaning you can't synthesize them or enough of them. >Tryptophan, Methionine, Valine, Threonine, phenylalanine, leucine, Isoleucine >and lysine. If you mix corn/grains with legumes you can get all eight >essential amino acids. Either one by itself won't do it. Corn has tryptophan >and Methionine while legumes have Isoleucine and lysine. Both corn and legumes >have valine, threonine, Phenylalanine and leucine. > >Regarding molecular form, all amino acids used by plants and animals are the >L- form as opposed to the D-form which is only made by chemists, not plants >and animals. When a chemical reaction is used in the lab to make "methionine" >both enantiomers (L and D) are made and the mixture is called racemic. If you >mean that it is accumulated as aldo met or aldo-s-met that may be true but the >body can convert any of these forms into the needed forms. > >Kevin Schooler Kevin, I passed your note and a few others on to Terry Giles, and this is his response to me ( *note---the asshole he refers to is not you:-)....there have been a few responses to me that were not the reasoned questions like you raise... - >Dan - The biggest problem with these types of arguments is ONE - You have assholes making stupid statements like "he doesn't know anything" - why is this - because I or we don't agree with his position - that's a little shallow. TWO - I can find research to support BOTH sides of the argument - so this means no matter what side you take - there is published research supporting both positions.......it comes down to a matter of "lets talk reality - fact" let's look at results and how things happen in the real world - not in fantasy land - where each side supports his or her position with "published" reports, tests and the like. Doctors no more agree on nutrition - the basis of nutrition or anything to do with nutrition - then the state can build a road in a week. It will never be a clear cut issue. As far as Mr. Microbiologist goes - I know what chemical and molecular structures look like on paper and I understand the theory behind the biochemical and biophysical reactions and responses - I also know that just because it looks one way on paper or in theory - doesn't mean it works. On paper a 747 jet isn't supposed to fly. And on paper - certain nutritional substances are supposed to do things they don't - we in the real world learn how to harness and utilize foods and nutritional supplements to accomplish many things - some things we accomplish are "by-products" or controlled side effects if you will of an item that SHOULD do one thing - but is manipulated to do ANOTHER. So we and they can argue until they are blue in the face - I just know what I have and what hundreds of people have achieved under my "unknowing" practices - so in short - if they don't agree - fine - so be it - Kevin, and others with vegetarian mind set-----believe what you want. I will waist no more time argueing this. Regards, Dan -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
