Introducing the new Neptune Bulletin Board System ABOUT NBBS ~~~~~~~~~~ The Neptune Bulletin Board System (NBBS) is a totally new *FREE* UK based electronic information service, specifically designed to meet the needs and interests of the UK Diving community. NBBS is operated by divers, for divers and is the only service to cater exclusively for their interests. The Bulletin Board is divided into different sections to cater for the needs of all divers, including General Diving, Clubs, UK sites, Wrecks, Marine & Conservation issues, Technical Diving & Diving related software. NBBS will shortly be connected to internationally shared Electronic Mail conferences on marine ecology & conservation. This will allow NBBS users to exchange news and views with people sharing similar interests on a world-wide basis. HOW TO GET ON-LINE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It is provided free of charge to all users, who have a computer equipped with a modem and a suitable communications program. The Bulletin Board is run on IBM Compatible computers, and can be accessed from any computer system which can read and write text based messages, anything from an Electronic Personal Organiser to a Supercomputer will work NBBS is available 23 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If you are a new user, you can call NBBS and log on immediately, your name and details will be validated, usually within a couple of hours and then you will be given full access to the diver's message & file sections. The system supports the remote downloading & uploading of bulk messages, allowing for reduced time spent connected via the telephone line. To help users make the most of this feature, Various software packages can be downloaded from NBBS which are compatible with the Bulletin Board Software. TECHNICAL INFORMATION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Modem connect speeds from 300 baud to 19,200 baud are supported, with full error correction features at appropriate baud rates. Due to occasional conflicts between the software used by the caller and the Bulletin Board, you may find that connections between 2400 baud and 9600 baud give the best results. Files can be uploaded and downloaded from NBBS using a variety of methods to suit the requirements of the user. Many different file transfer protocols are supported, including Xmodem, Ymodem and Zmodem. NBBS runs three separate virus programs, one of which runs continuously to check for all known type of virus infection.
