Sergeant Barkley: I have no problem with this. In fact, for my rescue and divemaster courses, I chose the agency and instructor that had the toughest requirements. I found out the instructor's elevated requirements BEFORE the course began and swam my ass off daily in the pool for months prior in order to ensure my compliance. (As an added benefit to the superior dive training, I established for myself a physical training regimen that I have continued well after the course conclusion.) BUT, there were students in my classes that were NOT told of these elevated requirements before they paid their money and started the courses. This is unfair. The agencies publish their prerequisites and physical ability criteria for divemaster courses. Students, in deciding to take the course, rely on those published criteria unless told otherwise. As long as you make clear to your students in writing your requirements BEFORE they sign up and pay, they have no beef and in the end they may be better divers and DMs. But, if you do not do that, you are not playing fairly.
