Older-style backplates have a horizontal double slot on to in the
middle of the plate, so the webbing looks something like this:

Can't comment on whether this is superior/inferior but it does exist.
A good metal shop could make you one; I could send you a picture ( I
own one) if you want;send me a snailmail address ( I dont have a
scanner yet,sorry)
