Subject: scoop on Taylor-Wharton tanks
cc: "Techdiver" <techdiver@aquanaut.com>, "Cavediver" <CAVERS@ww*.GE*.CO*>
Bill,
I talked to Taylor-Wharton today and got some info on their tanks. It
will be appx. 90 days until they are going to be ready to ship. They are
still trying to decide which is the best final coating to use. They
bought Coyne out recently, but the tanks Taylor-Wharton are manufacturing
are different. The coating process is not hot dipped but a sprayed on
coating (more even application, smoother, and other reasons he
mentioned). I might mention here that Pressed Steel is also using a
similar technique (they are no longer hot dipped). Taylor-Wharton is
only initially going to have low pressure 95's and 80's.

The specs on the tanks are very similar to PST's.
Here's a comparison of them in this order:

                             Taylor-Wharton Pressed Steel

Capacity (cu ft at + rating ) 95 95

Service Pressure (psi) 2400 2400

Nominal OD (inches) 8.0 8.0

Nominal Length (inches) 24.31 24.75

Nominal Tare Wt. (lbs.) 40 41

Nominal Buoyancy (lbs.) -.85 -1.0

Just for a comparison, PST's specs for their 104's are (in the same
order): 104, 2400, 8.00, 26 3/16, 46, -2.5

The buoyancy figures for both manufacturers are in salt water, no valve.

[I also talked to PST today, so their figures are also right from the
horses mouth.]

An interesting thing to note here is that with the PST 95 versus 104; the
104 is only 1.5 lbs per tank (or 3 lbs per set) heavier in the water
(empty), but weighs 5 lbs (or 10 lbs per set) more out of the water. I'm
opting for the 95's. I think they are the better option for a *cold
water* openwater diver that can use more of his air and might need to go
a distance to the dive site. Besides, I'm just a little shrimp and
probably couldn't get 104's out to the dive site or back into the boat!
:-o Plus, I don't really want to give US Divers or PST my business with
their stupid &^%$#$@# exclusive relationship. :-(

Regards,
