Al: All my dives are offshore. And, yes, I evaluate on-site. If you have a contiguous wreck and a reasonable current, I don't see the need for all the kinck-knacks. The type of mid-atlantic diving I do doesn not involve the types of currents mentioned in the WPB incident. It is usually easy to find the up line, if that is what you want. The question I have in my mind is what is likely to happen on a dive? Usually the worse is not finding the upline. In which case I would send up a bag. I would rather not do this so I take special care to know where I am on a wreck. If it is a well traveled wreck or good vis, I don't bother with the reel. Don't see a need for a strobe, as my 50 watt primary or backup can be used for the same purpose. A strobe is handy on a night dive for the anchor line, but it is rare when you can see it from beyond 10' away around here. If I were *really* concerned with being swept away at sea, I would go out and buy a Emergency Postion Location device or radio, which would be more effective than flares or strobes, seems to me. I endeavor to take the least amount of gear down with me as conditions allow.
