Subject: Gold coins

Hi

We recently came across 2  gold soveriegns while diving a wreck here 
in NZ. 
 They are covered in what looks like iron oxide and some  other black 
stuff.  Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the 'gunk' without 
damaging the coins?
