okay, here it is one last time. this is supposed to be a cave diving list, so drop it after this. an alpha particle consists of two protons and two neutrons and is the same as a helium nucleus. it is nothing else. one proton is the same as a hydrogen nucleus and is not an alpha paricle. there are two S orbitals, not one. H and He have electrons in the 1S orbital. Li and Be have electrons in the 1S and 2S orbitals. 1S and 2S are both spherical orbitals. an octet does not refer to a full 1S or 2S orbital. not until you reach Ne on the periodic table do you have a full octet of valence electrons. even then, they fall into 4 categories (S, Px, Py, and Pz). the P and S electrons have different energy levels. in north america, helium is mined from wells in texas, kansas, oklahoma, and saskatchewan. air products does not adiabatically produce helium. helium is only 5.24 +/- 0.04 ppm by volume in air. it is not economically feasible to do this cryogenic distillation. somebody must be getting mixed up between what chemists and physicists may attempt to do in the lab and what is real on a plant level. refrigeration is extremely expensive. air products mines their helium in kansas domestically and algeria overseas. helium from the sun does not enter the earth's atmosphere. i loved that one. aviator's oxygen does NOT have all the moisture removed. more is removed (versus usp) by additional vacuums on the cylinder to lower the dew point. the lower dew point is necessary in aviators to prevent freezing in the air lines at extreme altitudes where temperatures drop well into negative numbers. tdi is being watched by the dea and fbi as we type. watch as mulder and scully begin searching for clues to the great round one's origin. if they prove unsuccessful, they may bring in vinny terranova from the OCB. deep air if for FAS idiots. so, if a non-scientist like george has all of this figured out, why don't all of the "scientists"? scott -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
