the atmosphere only contains about 0.005% He, and the net flux is out we are not gaining He from the sun, we are losing it to space at least this is what my literature tells me I agree that He is common in the universe and that we originally had a lot of it on earth from the creation of the planet but much of it we find on earth now is a product of atomic decay alpha particles are 2+2 protons and neutrons unless all my books are wrong i don't know how most of the helium you buy is collected maybe it is collected out of the atmosphere, but it seems that most of it is collected either from underground deposits (often associated with natural gas) the percent found in these deposits is much higher if it is collected directly from the atmosphere, the net negative flux would tend to indicate that its original source was the earth, not space (can anybody confirm which way the flux goes? i'm basing a lot of this on that one fact) how the He is produced (on earth that is) and how it is collected are two different issues i am putting out my theory that most of the He found on earth was produced on earth by radioactive decay how it is collected i don't know; either by collection directly from the atmosphere (seems inefficient, but i dunno) or by collection from more concentrated deposits is there anyone here in the industry who can say for sure? now i just want to find out thanks ted -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
