Chill out Mark. This question gets asked at least twice a year, no big deal. And there is no good answer. Personally, I think of tech diving as when you go into planned decompression and are geared and attituded properly to handle it. As opposed to hopping in the water with an 80 in 40'-60' and farting around until you run out of air, then bolting to the surface (80% of all diving). Some people are happy with the 80 and bolt routine and have thousands of dives doing just that. Some people are either a bit more adventurous or are forced by local conditions to dive deeper. And if you want to dive deeper and spend some time down there, you gotta pay the piper (and pay and pay and pay) get the proper gear and knowledge. In the eyes of that gorgeous babe on the sun deck, to be a tech diver nowadays is easy. Marketing has provided all the ads and scary-looking gear to get that babe's heart throbbing. Just outfit your self in full OMS regalia, you know, the valve extensions, the superwings, double hoses, regs, gauges, roll bars, computers sticking out every which-way, sew mailorder TDI deepdiver patches all over you formerly dry suit, and give her the "tech diver in the hole" salute and I guarantee, buddy, you will get some tech nookie.
