Orient it just like the main buckle. This way you can adjust your light position easyly. I use a black plastic buckle which IMHO is easier to pop open than SS. Plus it's cheaper if you have to ditch it. I think the best way is to not use a buckle, but I don't want to bust any more cannisters. However way you orient it, you ought to do some pool time to get used to doffing the cannister with the buckle.
