Hydrogen sulfide is a strong toxin, but its strong smell (rotten eggs) will alert you to its presence. When salt water turns black on the bottom this indicates sulfur and anoxia. (The black stuff is iron sulfides). Don't linger in sulfurous water unless you're diving a fullface mask. In freshwater you wont get hydrogen sulfide -- you get methane, which is not toxic. Saltwater fish farming may get hydrogen sulfide killing fish in net cages, since it rises as a toxic "aeration" from polluted bottom. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
