A request for information...! My girlfriend, who's been diving ~5years to average depths of 30-40m (90-120ft) recently suffered a skin bend with muscle trauma while diving within air computer limits on an otherwise un-eventful dive profile. She was successfully recompressed then underwent screening for PFO (Patent Forum Ovale - hole in heart) and lung shunt. This test unfortunately revealed that she has a lung shunt and her diving has to be limited as a result. Apparently this condition is more common amongst women. She is now faced with a known increased risk and her main aim is to educate herself as to what diving with a lung shunt entails and how best to minimise the risks. She already dives on Nitrox and where appropriate is starting to use a 50% mix for ascents and precautionary decompression, including additional deep water stops and endeavours not to exert herself after the dive (which includes the un-necessary norm of climbing up ladders with twins and deco tank!) - comments would be appreciated! Recommendations by the consultant that examined her was 15m (45ft) on air or EAD of 25m (75ft). It would be nice to get some alternative opinions on the practices of diving with a lung shunt to build a more comprehensive picture of the situation. If anyone has any first hand experiences or knows of any good and valid references or research on lung shunts, both on the web or elsewhere we would very much appreciate it.
