Hi Merl.  Try rigging it just like one would rig a stage bottle:

In open water, I use this approach with an AL30 and it works very
well.  I'm using wings and a single-tank backplate with a one-piece
harness (very similar to a harness for doubles).  I breathe a long
hose (usually 5' but 7' works too) and that's what gets donated 
first because it's known to be working and can be done very quickly.  
Once things are under control you could hand off the bottle if that 
made the bailout smoother for you and your buddy.
