Hi Technical Divers,
I'm involved in the logistics of a New Zealand wide, government, marine
research institute. Our team of 25 divers is reasonably active on scallop,
rock lobster, abalone and sea urchin research. One of my duties is to
ensure this work is carried out safely.
I am a PADI Master Instructor and train all of our divers - have done so
for the last 10 years. I am not associated with a store, so can adhere to
the PADI standards without fear of corner cutting pressure. I find that I
can still apply the component of stress (learnt in my Navy training) and
combine it with the non threatening recreational approach to produce a
reasonably competent, professional diver.
I also maintain all of our diving equipment - Poseidon regulators,
Scubapro Stab Jackets, Air IIs, Viking and Brooks drysuits etc.
My specific research interest is the NZ abalone fishery which exists at
the top and south of our South Island. It is generally cold and rough
water diving throughout the year. Individually our group averages 150
hours diving each year.
I am interested in deep and cave diving but as yet see no need or place
for Nitrox diving in the science and research field in NZ. - Need convncing.
I am currently finishing off a Code of Practice for Scientific and
Research Diving in NZ. It will be used by all government divers.
I'm also the Diving Officer for our NZ Antarctic Research Programme at
Scott Base in McMurdo Sound.
Hope this gets through...I've had problems in the past getting News
postings out.
