it has been my experience that when you are doing a evac from a boat with a helo there are two things that the pilot will ask the capt of the vessel to do . One is that heor she would ask the capt to make a certain heading at clutch speed, all determined by sea state and or wind direction and so on. or the pilot will ask the capt to go diw. (dead in the water) do not touch controls of vessel. the helo can control the spin of the vessel by using its rotor wash. and sar pilots practice this very very often. Sean is wright that they do lower a cable with a basket or litter or swimmer or what ever sometimes even pumps if needed. the important thing to remember is to ground what ever is lowered before you touch it or you will get one hell of a shock, helos build up alot of static electricity. in rough seas they will generally still hoist through rigging on the vessel, if deammed to dangerous they will put a rescue swimmer in the water. oh when I say they I mean U.S.COAST GUARD. if you ask how i know i did it for 12 years.and enjoyed every minute of it. if you would like to know more i would be happy to tell you what i know, or point you in the correct direction.
