Most of the Keys operations are a pain for the tech diver to deal with, especially if you approach them with an attitude, but there are a few good ones who try to cooperate and help you get what you want where they can. Keep in mind that there is not a shop on this planet that "owes" you or me anything in the line of services ! What is more interresting is that if a friend had not informed me of this incident chances are there would have been no more than maybe 6 divers on the planet who knew about it. I'll bet 5 bucks that the shop personnel have standing orders not to talk about this to anyone under threat of firing and I doubt that the owner ran down to the local newspaper to report it. No one is going to make it easy for you to find out about near misses and accidents. Statistics and government reports are a woefully inadequate source of information on the frequency of such things, which is why some of DAN's statistical research is of limited value. How many of DAN's reported deaths would you have known about if they did not make access to the information easy by publication in dive magazines? Who knows how many home brewers or shops have had accidents with oxygen - would you tell us if you had ? No body even knows how many certified divers there are or how many of them actually still dive and statistics have been used to equate the risks of diving with those of bowling. I am not going to subject the guy who told me of this to a barage of inquiries but I said I would let you know by private e-mail who to call if you wanted more info. In return I hope you will tell us of any further details you are able to find out, and please, keep his name to yourself.
